Amber, I believe that I once mention to you that I took a course in creative writing for children. I learned much from them. I was offered an advanced course but the cost was more then I could handle. Included were tips of how to approach publishers. And the kinds of stories publishers were looking for at the time.
The way the course worked was an already published author was assigned to a new student. An introductory letter was sent to me by my instructor. The instructor was quite young. I do have to say, with a wink, that I found an obvious boner one time with her editing my work. I can't recall what it was, something minor, maybe a spelling error. I couldn't help but bring it to her attention.
One negative that I found in the course was that I was being pressured to purchase a word processor of some kind recommended by them thru their own outlet. At first it was only a simple brochure in my returned manuscript envelope. Later it was almost a small booklet in it's own envelope. This kind of advertising turned me off completely.
The very first lesson was the choice of one of four pictures of some country scene. I was to write a story around one of these pictures. The picture was showing a boy running toward the barn. In the backgroung was a cat, a dog or two dogs. A horse, a few cows and I think a man on a tractor.
My assignment was to conjure up a story that included as many of the individual figures or whatever I could observe that made up this picture. This included a dark cloud and also the sun shining off to one side. There was a fence and a hayfield or a meadow in the distance.
It was easy for me to do since I am totally familiar with scenes of this kind. It has been close to 30 years ago that I took this course of creative writing for kids.. It was a great help to say the least. And fun too. If I recall correctly, I was limited to about 500 words.
Also included was a few addresses of publishers that might be interest in stories like this.
