Margret was a nanny goat. She came to live with us as a very tiny four legged creature. You simply could not help but love her. For the most part Margret behaved herself and was allowed in the house.
It went great until she discovered my mother watering her house plants. Then is when Margret........

That was when Margret began eating the exotic plants. These were more than exotic plants, they were very rare plants from the planet Zorus. Only a few homes on Earth had these "house" plants but my family was one of the lucky ones.
After Margret began eating the bluish plants, she slowly began to act different. She was still her normal polite self but sounds had changed. She could suddenly speak like you and me!......

She began to jump up and down like a jumping bean.
"Margret what is wrong with you? Is it something you ate?"
"AAAARRRRPPPT" replied Margret as she belched loudly. All her friends looked at her in wonderment. Even old Rosco the patriarch looked up from his nap. He got to his feet and stetched his long legs. He would have to do something about this, but what?

Margret answered Rosco when he spoke to her. It was quite obvious that she understood his question. But since she had not been in the habit of speaking like the rest of us, her thoughts were a bit jumbled as she wrestled with the words that would explain her problem.
Rosco was quite intelligent. He decided that it was a good idea to help his friend Margret sort out her thoughts and how to express them clearly. Rosco took Margret over to the big oak tree and sat down with her.

Unbeknowst to anyone Mother's exotic plants had a special DNA feature that enabled anything that ate these plants to almost instantly change the ability of the brain to form words. The problem was only to train the vocal cords and the various throat muscles to respond correctly to the instructions from the brain.
This could be a major problem. Goats normally do not form words. Mostly they just bleat their displeasure loudly or in a softer and affectionate way.

"MMOOORRREE GGRRAASS," Bleated Margret! Rosco could see that Margret had nibbled all the grass in her yard. This is why she had reached thru the fence to nibble on Mom's house plants. She was hungry! Mom did not realize that Margret could reach thru the fence and chew the leaves.
"II'MM HHUUUNNGGRYY!" explained Margret, as best as she could. Rosco was a pretty wise goat. Now he had to somehow make the mother understand what had taken place. Now old Rosco could only bleat in the normal way of goats. Rosco decided that he had to make some kind of ruckus so that Mother would come out of the house.
An old piece of farm machinery had been abandoned in their pasture. Rosco decided to make the tin on that machine sound out as loud as he could. "BANG!" it went when Rosco dove into it with his horns. He stopped to look toward the house to see if Mother came out. But she was not there. "BANG, BANG!" and Rosco bumped it again and again all afternoon.

Rosco was becoming impatient but if there's one thing that a goat does not lack, it is determination. And his hard head kept him from getting a headache as he banged and banged again. Imagine if we tried such a thing with our flimsy human skulls! We'd be aching after our very first bang! Still no sign came from the house or from mother. But Margret walked up along side Rosco and said, "Bah ah ad, Bah ah ad, Bad for your head!" Rosco, who had never heard a goat like himself make human noises, was quite astonished and more than a little perturbed. "Stop that!" said Rosco. But all that came from Rosco's mouth was "naaaaaa, naaaaaa umh". "I'm not doing anything", replied Margret who completely understood what Rosco had said.
