Ok, I know its going to end up in this board eventually so I'll just get it in here now lol. Yes, I am an author who went through them.
Publish America will not help in any way and they charge a lot for their books. This give you the option to have your story edited. There's 3 options for that.
1. Skip the process and go straight to having your book created with cover and binding.
2. Quick editing.
3. Exstended editing which can take up to one year. (If you do go with them, choose this one)
The quality is good and the pages print well but after its been printed, if you see any changes, you have to pay for them.
You have to get your book on the shelves if you want to see them in bookstores. Other wise, its only available online (there's a lot of places that you will see your book online but that's it).
You have to promote your book yourself.
If you want your book reviewed, you have to do it yourself using the copies they give you (only 3) or buy them at their discounted price.
You can't link directly to your book in their bookstore so if you want people to buy your book through them, you have to link to the bookstore and hope your buyer knows to type in the title and other information.
Once you publish your book and want to publish another one, chances are you will be turned down because sales will be low. They don't care if your next book is better, they just care about the sales from the first book.
Some books are not returnable even though they say they are.
Its hard to get these books in stores because PA has a bad reputation. It doesn't matter if they are print on demand because many large companies print their books like that now days. The stores just use that excuse.
PA accept a lot of books each year, more than other companies which means they are profiting big time on our books. There are complaints that people aren't getting their money. How much of that is true, I don't know.
Please do your research before signing with them. They aren't all bad but some people do regret signing with them. As much as I hate to admit it, I do too.
I am in the middle of working on trying to get someone to buy out my contract. The only problem is, I have to retype my book because I lost my original and PA won't send me a new electronic file. They will if I purchase more than 8 copies and then buy the e-book. I don't want an e-book.
